How to Clean and Care for a Leather Purse (Tooled, Cowhide & Italian Leather)
The word before the word.
A great leather bag is an investment. It goes everywhere with you — to work, to school pickup, to the rodeo, to dinner — and with a little care, it can go everywhere with you for years.
The good news? Caring for a leather purse is easier than most women think. You don't need a cabinet full of products or a professional cleaner. You just need to know what your bag is made of and a few simple habits.
Here's how to clean and care for a leather purse — including hand-tooled leather, hair-on cowhide, and Italian leather — so it only gets better with time.
First: Know What Your Bag Is Made Of
Different leathers need different care. Before you clean anything, check your bag's product description. Most of our bags fall into one (or a mix) of these:
- Hand-tooled leather: smooth leather carved or stamped with designs, often with painted or dyed details.
- Hair-on cowhide: leather with the hair still on, usually in patches or panels.
- Italian leather: smooth, often washed or vintage-finished leather that develops a soft, lived-in look.
- Suede: soft, napped leather that needs its own gentle approach. (See our guide to suede leather handbags.)
Many western bags combine several — like tooled leather with a cowhide inset — so you may use a few of the tips below on one bag.
The Golden Rule: Always Spot Test
Before using any cleaner or conditioner, test it on a small hidden area, like the inside of a strap or the bottom of the bag. Wait until it dries completely and check for darkening, color changes, or spots. Leather, dyes, and paints can react differently, so a 30-second test can save your favorite bag.
How to Clean a Leather Purse (Everyday Care)
- Empty it out. Remove everything and shake out crumbs and dust.
- Dust the outside. Wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Spot clean gently. For light marks, use a cloth that's barely damp with water. Wipe gently — don't scrub or soak the leather.
- Let it air dry. Keep it away from heaters, hair dryers, and direct sun, which can dry out and crack leather.
- Condition occasionally. A quality leather conditioner every few months (or when the leather feels dry) keeps it soft and helps prevent cracking. A little goes a long way.
What to Avoid
- Baby wipes, household cleaners, rubbing alcohol, and hand sanitizer — they can strip color and dry out leather.
- Soaking the bag or putting it in the washing machine.
- Heavy layers of conditioner, which can leave leather sticky or darken it.
How to Care for Hand-Tooled Leather
Hand-tooled leather is a work of art, and the carved details are part of what makes your bag one of a kind. A few tips to keep them crisp:
- Brush out the details. Dust settles into the carved lines. A soft, clean brush (a soft toothbrush or makeup brush works) gently lifts it out.
- Be extra careful with painted areas. Many tooled bags have hand-painted flowers or dyed accents. Avoid rubbing these with water or cleaner, and always spot test.
- Condition lightly. Apply conditioner with a soft cloth in small amounts and buff off any extra so it doesn't collect in the tooling.

How to Clean a Hair-On Cowhide Purse
Hair-on cowhide is surprisingly durable, but it needs different care than smooth leather.
- Brush in the direction of the hair. Use a soft brush to remove dust and keep the hair smooth. Never brush against the grain.
- Spot clean only. Blot spills right away with a dry cloth. For marks, use a barely damp cloth and wipe in the direction of the hair.
- Don't condition the hair. Leather conditioner is for smooth leather only. Keep it off the cowhide panels.
- Don't soak it. Too much water can damage the hide underneath the hair.

How to Care for Italian Leather
Italian leather is made to be lived in. Many styles have a washed or vintage finish that softens and develops a rich patina with use — so small marks often blend in over time and become part of the bag's character.
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to keep it clean.
- Condition occasionally to keep the leather supple.
- Embrace the patina. That deepening color and softness is what makes Italian leather so loved.

Got Caught in the Rain?
- Blot (don't rub) the water off with a soft, dry cloth.
- Stuff the bag with paper or a towel to help it keep its shape.
- Let it air dry naturally, away from heat and sun.
- Once completely dry, apply a light layer of conditioner if the leather feels stiff.
Watch Out for Denim Dye Transfer
Dark, new denim can rub off onto lighter leather and cowhide, especially on crossbody bags that rest against your hip. To prevent it, wash new dark jeans before wearing them with a light-colored bag, or wear the bag a little higher on your body.
How to Store a Leather Purse
- Stuff it. Fill the bag with tissue paper or a small pillow to hold its shape.
- Use a breathable cover. A cotton dust bag or pillowcase protects it from dust. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.
- Store it upright. Don't hang leather bags by the straps for long periods, which can stretch them.
- Keep it cool and dry. Avoid hot cars, attics, and direct sunlight, which can fade and dry out leather.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you clean a leather purse at home?
Empty the bag, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and spot clean marks with a barely damp cloth. Let it air dry away from heat, then condition lightly. Always spot test any product on a hidden area first.

It's best not to. Baby wipes and many household wipes contain ingredients that can strip color and dry out leather over time.
How often should I condition my leather purse?
Every few months for a bag you carry often, or whenever the leather starts to feel dry. Don't overdo it — a thin layer is all you need.
